Creativity is seeing, communicating and producing ideas in a new way
Try to look at something in a different way today and think about how it could be changed. Use as many of your senses as possible – how does it sound, smell, look, feel etc… Ask “why is it like this?” Ask “how can this be changed?” Ask “what if…?”
These are some of my favourite quotes about creativity:
“You see things; and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?’” – George Bernard Shaw
“There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns”. – Edward de Bono
“Creativity is contagious. Pass it on” – Albert Einstein
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” – Maya Angelou
and finally…
“This might not work.” – Seth Godin
I love Seth Godin’s quote as it sums up creativity perfectly. It is about trying something out and not being scared of getting it wrong. Don’t be scared of making mistakes – some of the best-known inventions actually originated from a ‘mistake’. Let your imagination run free. If you’re not happy with what you produce then try again in a different way. Creativity is using your imagination to see connections and ideas that have not have been put together in that way before in order to create something new. This may be making a physical product or conceiving a different way to perform a task or to communicate something.
For me creativity is about generating many different ideas and then refining them until I find the one idea that I think works the best, the one that solves the problem and that makes an emotional connection. It is about keeping the end goal in mind. I may just want to have fun making marks on a piece of paper with my son or I may be working on a commission to produce an effective brand identity for a client to help them connect and communicate with their target audience.
